If the elder person’s hoarding is extreme enough that it poses a physical risk, the family members should contact Adult Protective Services where a representative trained in this disorder can begin to address the problem. Another possibility is for for a family member to seek guardianship over the elder hoarder through the probate court if the hoarder is determined to lack capacity to do some of the tasks necessary to care for his or her person or property. Once appointed as guardian, the family member can protect the elder against foreclosure or eviction. Finally, if the hoarding is severe enough, the family member or a professional can petition the probate court for an involuntary mental commitment.
