Focus on Services Serving Our Seniors (SOS)
Serving Our Seniors (SOS) is a referral based program between the Department of Water and Power (DWP), Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) and the Department of Aging (DoA). The program began as a result of the increased identification by DWP workers of seniors who were in need of ser-vices and/or assistance and the lack of a coordinated referral system between DWP and DoA. Since the program’s inception in 2000, there have been over 1000 referrals to the DoA via the SOS program. To date, the majority of the referrals have been the most vulnerable seniors who do not have access to services, or do not know how to access services to meet their needs. In 2004, the DoA expanded the program to include referrals for LAHD. When a DWP or LAHD SOS referral is made to the DoA, the SOS Coordinator reviews the incoming referral. The SOS Coordinator then refers the senior based on their identified needs to a care manager at one of the City’s 16 Multipurpose Senior Centers or to Adult Protective Services. Additionally, the SOS Coordinator follows-up with each referral to ensure that the senior was contacted and the neces-sary services or assistance were? provided. For more information about the SOS program contact the DoA’s SOS Coordinator, Helen Lee, at 213 252 3305.

Collaborative Efforts Produce the Best Results.

Traditionally, hoarding was dealt with only through City Code Enforcement when property became a health or safety hazard.   However, Code Enforcement is limited in scope. In some cities, the city can only issue citations for violations on the on the outside of the property.  A better approach involves a coordinated plan involving reprentatives from Adult Protective Service, Animal Control, Senior Service Providers, Code Enforcement, the Fire Department, and Housing agencies.  This is best option for lasting solutions. Buena Park, CA's Neighborhood Improvement Task Force is a particularly successful model of collaborative, community oriented approach to addressing the issue of hoarding and its effects on the hoarder and those affected by hoarding.

The Institute on Compulsive Hoarding and Cluttering (ICHC) is pleased to announce that a new treatment group is starting April 28th, from 6pm to 8pm, and will be held every Monday evening thereafter for 16 weeks.  This treatment group is unique because it is the first treatment group of its type that is available in the Bay Area, designed to specifically treat the behaviors associated with compulsive hoarding and cluttering.

The Mental Health Association of San Francisco (MHA-SF) and Family Service Agency of San Francisco are collaborating to provide this opportunity to those individuals who meet criteria for the group.  For an intake, please contact Judy Hirsch, PsyD, of the Family Service Agency of SF at (415) 474-7310 ext.483

This treatment group is sponsored in part by a grant from the City and County of San Francisco Human Services Agency, Department of Aging and Adult Services.

Beverly Taylor was the hypnotherapist on the TLC TV "Help! I'm a Hoarder"   While the show ended up with hypnosis looking like a "magic cure", it portrayed what actually happened (no special effects other than they sped up the morning's cleaning).  Beverly has worked with hoarders with OCD, but it takes a lot longer for them to see results (e.g., 12 or more sessions versus 3 to 6 for clutterers).
